Génome Québec would like to congratulate Dr. Daniel Gaudet, professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montréal (U de M), Research Director at Chicoutimi Hospital and Director of the centre de médecine génique communautaire of U de M, for receiving the Biotechnology of Tomorrow Award at the 2012 Genesis Award Gala. For a fifth consecutive year, Génome Québec is proud to acknowledge the exceptional work of an individual (or company) which has had significant impact on the potential use of genomics in either the healthcare system or the development of a sustainable economy.
Through Dr. Gaudet’s initiative and leadership, the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS) announced in July 2011 the launch of a pilot project to provide screening for four inherited recessive diseases commonly found in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. The project is a world first, offering an innovative solution to a major public health and services issue in Québec.
Marc LePage, President and CEO of Génome Québec, pointed out that Dr. Gaudet’s research has led to considerable progress being made in healthcare: “This breakthrough just goes to show how important genomics is when it comes to facilitating the transition of a discovery from the lab to the community and its citizens. The project will have a significant and direct impact on the improvement of available treatments. Génome Québec is pleased to be associated with the Genesis Gala and to bestow this award upon Dr. Gaudet for his remarkable track record and achievements.”
Over 12 years ago, Dr. Gaudet founded ECOGENE-21, a company he has headed ever since. It specializes in a systemic approach to health and translational medicine with the goal of developing and evaluating diagnostic tools, innovative treatments and new knowledge and technologies involving genetic research and its application to clinical practice.
