The team of Dr. Nada Jabado, paediatric hemato-oncologist and senior scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), in collaboration with researchers from SickKids and the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR), has identified the first traces of cancer at a very early stage in fetal development.

The study, published yesterday in Nature, shows that in some cases, brain tumours arise from cell populations and events that would occur in humans at six weeks in utero.

Brain tumours are the leading cause of non-accidental death in children in Canada. Results of this study could lead the way to the discovery of better treatments to attack these lethal tumours.
