Clubroot management in Canada relies heavily on the use of clubroot resistant varieties. Unfortunately, over the years, the resistance has been rapidly overcome by new pathotypes of Plasmodiophora brassicae although there is also evidence that complex mixes of virulent and avirulent P. brassicae populations co-exist, with virulent populations eventually taking over a field and causing infection. With precise knowledge of the diversity of pathotypes in the field and their virulence towards commercial canola varieties it would be possible to tailor the selection of resistant canola varieties to use in an infested field for the longest possible time.
