Genomics research, for all of its wonders, also brings worries. If Genome Canada is to sustain public support for this type of research, the public must be involved in discussions about the ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social issues surrounding genomics research. Canadians must understand the relative risks and benefits, and the funding and social policy related to genomics must respect the democratic values of representation, transparency and accountability.

This project aims to bring together three streams of research: consultation – studying the diversity and nature of interests related to genomics; deliberation – studying the mechanisms that improve governance and enhance trust, and modeling – using computer modeling to consider the tradeoffs and particularly the unintended consequences involved in various policy choices. It includes collaborations with researchers across Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and the United States.
