The cannabis industry faces ongoing challenges in maintaining plant health, achieving consistent THC and CBD levels, and preventing contamination by harmful microorganisms, particularly mycotoxin‑producing fungi that threaten crop safety, product quality, and consumer health. Cannabis is highly susceptible to fungal pathogens such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium, which produce aflatoxins and ochratoxins that can persist through processing. These toxins pose serious health risks, especially for immunocompromised consumers, and are a leading cause of product recalls in Canada. Our recent study revealed that once toxigenic fungi establish during the plant life cycle, they are extremely difficult to eliminate, highlighting the need for early intervention. At the same time, strict regulations require growers to maintain consistent THC and CBD levels to ensure regulatory compliance, consumer safety, and secure reliable profits.
This project investigates a natural, bacteria‑based biostimulant designed to promote plant growth while protecting cannabis from pathogenic and mycotoxin‑producing fungi. Preliminary observations indicate that such biostimulants may reduce disease pressure, enhance plant vigor, and provide a sustainable alternative to conventional chemical treatments. The project will assess the biostimulant’s capacity to strengthen plant resilience, improve cannabinoid consistency, and reduce microbial contamination.
To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, the research will use omics‑based approaches to examine plant physiology, gene expression, metabolic pathways, and plant–microbe interactions. Overall, this project aims to support safer and more sustainable cannabis production by reducing reliance on chemical inputs, improving product quality, and ensuring consistent, safe products for consumers.
