He then completed a general surgical residency at Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al, followed by a fellowship in surgical oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. After working as a surgical oncologist at the H\u00f4tel-Dieu hospital in Montr\u00e9al, he returned to the USA as a visiting investigator at the National Human Genome Research Institute in Maryland. In 2003, he began working as a surgical oncologist at the Jewish General Hospital in Montr\u00e9al and is presently the Medical Director of the inter-disciplinary breast cancer team. Besides practicing breast cancer surgery, Dr. Basik also leads a research laboratory studying the molecular biology of breast cancer. His research interests include DNA alterations in breast cancer and the discovery of novel diagnostic biomarkers for breast cancer. He is also studying the mechanism of resistance to novel treatments such as Herceptin.
