{"id":16652,"date":"2015-12-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-12-15T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/genomequebec.com\/actualites-et-publications\/new-pan-canadian-program-to-accelerate-data-sharing-in-biomedical-research-and-patient-care\/"},"modified":"2015-12-15T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-12-15T05:00:00","slug":"new-pan-canadian-program-to-accelerate-data-sharing-in-biomedical-research-and-patient-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genomequebec.com\/en\/news-and-publications\/new-pan-canadian-program-to-accelerate-data-sharing-in-biomedical-research-and-patient-care\/","title":{"rendered":"New pan-Canadian program to accelerate data sharing in biomedical research and patient care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Genome Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), is pleased to announce the result of the funding competition Sharing Big Data for Health Care Innovation: Advancing the Objectives of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian International Data Sharing Initiative (Can-SHARE) will receive $3.3 million in funding from multiple sources including Genome Canada, CIHR, G\u00e9nome Qu\u00e9bec, Genome British Columbia and the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Canadian International Data Sharing Initiative to accelerate health-care innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><br \/>The dramatically reduced cost of DNA sequencing has led to the accumulation of vast amounts of genomic data. These data \u2013 often called \u201cBig Data\u201d \u2013 are to genomic and clinical research what the Internet is to social media: the platform upon which collaboration and innovation are built. This can only happen, though, if data are accessible and widely shared \u2013 a distant reality, both in Canada and internationally. Some of the barriers to achieving this goal are technical, such as ensuring interoperability across institutional, provincial and national jurisdictions; others are socioethical and legal, such as differing consent, privacy and ethics review.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<br \/>The Canadian International Data Sharing Initiative (Can-SHARE) is led by P<sup>3<\/sup>G (the Public Population Project in Genomics and Society). It\u00a0will strengthen and expand Canadian leadership in Big Data sharing through the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH). GA4GH was established in 2013 to encourage collaboration on the development of innovative solutions to accelerate international sharing of genomic and clinical data. Can-SHARE\u2019s principal investigators are Pr. Bartha Maria Knoppers of McGill University, Pr.
