DNA is much more<\/span> complex than<\/span> researchers<\/span> had believed<\/span> it in the early<\/span> 2000s.<\/span> S<\/span>ince 2003,<\/span> s<\/span>ome 450<\/span> researchers from<\/span> more than thirty<\/span> laboratories<\/span> based in different countries<\/span> (mainly<\/span> USA<\/span>, Europe and Asia<\/span>) worked<\/span> on the <\/span><\/span>ENCODE <\/span><\/span>project<\/span> <\/span>(<\/span>Encyclopedia of DNA<\/span> Elements) : <\/span><\/span>Scientists<\/span> have identified<\/span> each<\/span> DNA sequence<\/span> and analyzed<\/span> their function.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The result<\/span>?<\/span> They found<\/span> that at least 80<\/span>% of the DNA<\/span> is active,<\/span> much more than<\/span> previously thought<\/span>.<\/span> We knew that<\/span> the genes coding for<\/span> the synthesis of<\/span> different proteins<\/span> that make up the<\/span> human body<\/span> (cells<\/span>, tissues, organs<\/span>) accounted for<\/span> at most<\/span> 2-3<\/span>%<\/span> of the molecule.<\/span> The rest had<\/span> been<\/span> called<\/span>, erroneously,<\/span> “junk<\/span> DNA”<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
