G\u00e9nome Qu\u00e9bec would like to congratulate Dr. Daniel Gaudet, professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al (U de M), Research Director at Chicoutimi Hospital and Director of the centre de m\u00e9decine g\u00e9nique communautaire of U de M, for receiving the Biotechnology of Tomorrow Award at the 2012 Genesis Award Gala. For a fifth consecutive year, G\u00e9nome Qu\u00e9bec is proud to acknowledge the exceptional work of an individual (or company) which has had significant impact on the potential use of genomics in either the healthcare system or the development of a sustainable economy.<\/p>\n
Through Dr. Gaudet\u2019s initiative and leadership, the minist\u00e8re de la Sant\u00e9 et des Services sociaux (MSSS) announced in July 2011 the launch of a pilot project to provide screening for four inherited recessive diseases commonly found in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. The project is a world first, offering an innovative solution to a major public health and services issue in Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n

Marc\u00a0LePage, President and CEO of G\u00e9nome\u00a0Qu\u00e9bec, pointed out that Dr. Gaudet\u2019s research has led to considerable progress being made in healthcare: \u201cThis breakthrough just goes to show how important genomics is when it comes to facilitating the transition of a discovery from the lab to the community and its citizens. The project will have a significant and direct impact on the improvement of available treatments. Over 12 years ago, Dr. Gaudet founded ECOGENE-21, a company he has headed ever since. It specializes in a systemic approach to health and translational medicine with the goal of developing and evaluating diagnostic tools, innovative treatments and new knowledge and technologies involving genetic research and its application to clinical practice.<\/p>\n
