May is a special time of year in Québec, as the province celebrates Tree and Forest Month. As a fitting tribute, John Mackay and Jean Bousquet, two Québec-based scientists from Laval University, have made a major breakthrough in the rapidly evolving field of forestry research. The team has, in fact, sequenced the full genome of the white spruce and Norwegian spruce. These findings are expected to yield significant benefits for the environment and the forest industry’s competitiveness.
